PhD student, Jack Bishop has joined Talent Intuition under the KESS programme. The pan-Wales skills scholarship links companies with academic expertise. While studying at the University of South Wales, Jack will work with the Talent Intuition data team part-time for three years as a data scientist.

Jack, who holds a master’s degree in mathematics with First Class Honours from Cardiff University will be applying machine learning to find patterns in Talent Intuition’s data that that feed into the company’s Stratigens platform. Jack’s project is titled ‘Big Data Analytics for Predicting Talent Trends and Demand’ and will involve applying procedures to take ‘noise’ out of a large variety of data sources at scale. His work support the continuous improvement Stratigens which helps companies make workforce and workplace decisions to drive competitive advantage.

Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS 2) is a major pan-Wales operation supported by European Social Funds (ESF) through the Welsh Government. KESS 2 links companies and organisations with academic expertise in the higher education sector in Wales.

Alison Ettridge, Chief Believer and CEO at Talent Intuition welcomed Jack to the team: “We’re thrilled to have you on board Jack. It’s fantastic to be partnering again with the University of South Wales. The data science team at USW are brilliant, as is our contact for the KESS programme, Penny Holborn. We’ve worked closely with USW in the past, supporting a full time MSc student, Lina, who is now a full-time employee of Talent Intuition. Partnering through the KESS programme enables us as a small Wales-based business to undertake innovative research that has the potential to transform our business”.

Dr Penny Holborn, a Senior Lecturer and course leader of the MSc in Data Science at USW said: “Through KESS we’re looking to bring together the expertise and knowledge from academia and industry to investigate real-world problems. Plus, we’re able to support Wales based SMEs by bolstering their research capacity by linking with a PhD or Masters project. We’re pleased to be working in partnership with Talent Intuition again after we placed a Master’s student with Alison and the team two years ago.”

On joining the team, Jack commended: “During my time at university I became very interested in machine learning and data science, particularly at the mathematical level. It’s a great opportunity for me to work with Talent Intuition in this role as I can both further my passion for learning as well as be introduced to the real-world industry of data science.”

KESS 2 involves all universities in Wales and is led by Bangor University. Following the highly successful KESS project between 2009 and 2014, KESS 2 is now in the second round of funding and will provide 645 scholarships over the course of six years.
